Wyoming High Rodeo

The program began as a Post sponsored project in Saratoga in 1955, then Douglas accepted the challenge a few years later. In 1959 it became a program of The American Legion, Department of Wyoming and has remained there since. At first it was a local area program that eventually grew to include the whole State. The first Department sponsored Rodeo had 56 contestants, and grew in the 1970's to over 600 contestants, now we see about 200 young men and women at our Rodeo finals that compete on a comparable scale with College and Professional competitors.

The Department of Wyoming is proud that it is the only American Legion Department to sponsor the High School Rodeo Association that qualifies Wyoming Champions to the National Finals. High School Rodeo not only teaches these outstanding youthes the values of citizenship, respect for rules, loyalty to our State, courage and physical fitness, but it also produces some great Ambassadors representing the Great State of Wyoming.

The rodeo season starts after the High School National Finals in August. The season runs through the year with local events throughout the state. The Finals are held in June.
